brand extension so last semester i had to do an assignment in which i came up with a brand extension. a brand extension is basically a company/brand that is a mainstay of a certain product category, that enters a new product category on the strength of its success in the original product category. that sounds complicated but it isn’t. the example i came up with, it was really los’ idea, was Apple coming out with a line of ikea-like furniture. sounds like a good enough idea right? i thought so. well i was browsing likecool.com and i found this. i’ll attach the image as well as my original assignment. Bryan Lewis Professor Ghanimi ADV3001 Brand Extension: Apple ‘Comfort’ Apple is one of the leading computer designers / manufacturers for top-quality, durable personal computers. Apple has excelled in its product category by consistently setting trends in the computer and mobile phone industry. One of the main elements that makes Apple so successful is its minimalist, sleek approach towards design. Apple has decided to step into the furniture industry with a focus on maintaining the Apple style of design. Apple stores in 3 major cities, San Francisco, New York and Miami, will begin setting up Apple computers for demo in Apple’s new line of furniture ‘Comfort.’ Apple associates in-store will provide assistance from the new ‘Genius Bar:Lounge,’ which will be exactly the same as Apple’s original Genius Bar with the only difference being the setting of said interaction. In-store associates will not lounge on the furniture during floor roaming. The furniture is only to be used by customers wanting to demo products or by associates providing assistance to customers. Initially, the furniture will have only a few key characteristics. All of the furniture will be displayed in-store assembled, and will be sold broken in to various pieces for assembly by the consumer. All of the furniture will adhere to a minimalist design approach. All designs will adhere to an ergonomically pleasing aesthetic in line with a combination of IKEA and Apple’s prior overall designs. An essential feature of the Apple Comfort furniture brand will be its design. Keeping in mind that all furniture will have to be put together by the consumer, designs will have to adhere to a minimalist approach. IKEA’s product line would be a general idea for the aesthetics of the Apple Comfort furniture line. All furniture should include a small Apple logo in a conspicuous, but not obnoxious, location. The product line should start using a color swatch similar to all Apple Mac products currently, white, black and brushed grey, with a wider color array to follow depending on the success of the brand extension.

Brand Extension: Apple ‘Comfort’

Apple is one of the leading computer designers / manufacturers for top-quality, durable personal computers. Apple has excelled in its product category by consistently setting trends in the computer and mobile phone industry. One of the main elements that makes Apple so successful is its minimalist, sleek approach towards design. Apple has decided to step into the furniture industry with a focus on maintaining the Apple style of design.

So this is the first project I was given at my internship with 352 Media Group.

Here’s the prompt I received from my Track Director.

_____

First Assignment
So what are we designing? Let’s start off our first project by designing a website from an offline inspiration. Meaning, anything offline that inspires you….a texture, a magazine cover, a book, a rock. Use something about that thing in your design.
Examples from last semester:
· A grammar book that a journalism major liked. She created a website called gossip grammar. Some elements from the book cover were used in the design.
· Another student was inspired by a band and decided to design a website about them. She used colors that were representative of the band, photography that was provided by the band…etc.
· The door is open for creativity. Include photos from http://sxc.hu or istockphoto.com or even take your own.
Think about features that would be included in your site based off of features that are provided from the http://demo.352media.com site we looked at earlier.
Will there be a rotating slideshow area? What content should go in there? How will that content help your subject? What is the user supposed to do with that area? What do you even want the viewer to do when they land on the page?
What other features do you want to include? Ecommerce? Do they need a shopping cart? News & press? Events? You name it, you pick it. Keep in mind that we’ll want to critique these on Friday. So don’t get too far over your head with features.
I’d like to see a homepage design, and a simple page design.

I went with an MMA social networking site based around finding training partners. I present for critique tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed =o)

Allied MMA / Members Page - Version 1
Arbor Care Tree Service

This is a mockup of a website I designed for a new lawn care company here in Gainesville.

Client: Arbor Care Tree Service

Need: Logo, Website

Problem: Client is a new company entering an industry of long-standing competitors with longstanding track records of good work. Client is not as well known as its competitors.

Solution: Build a one page website with photos of the client’s latest work and allow past customers to submit their testimonials as to how good the service was that they received.

Features: The website would have numerous “before-and-after” photos that the user would be able to scroll through. Testimonials would cycle weekly giving users a view of how many satisfied customers that the client had.
A Veteran’s Hope - Version 1

This is another charity website template I designed for 352Media for their designyour.org website. My main critique on my last site, the pet rescue, was that it was simply too dense with features for a free website. The pet rescue website was not something they would want to give away for free in other words. So with this site I decided to go lighter on the content side and focus more on arrangement. I used some fairly subtle techniques to divide my subsections within the content section as well as the right column. I have some great revision ideas so version 1.1 will be a step up
